Sustainable Dog Food | A Review of NeoBites

This post was sponsored by NeoBites, but all thoughts and opinions are honest, true and, most importantly, mine.

Hey dog people! I’m coming at you today with a bit of a different, but much-needed post. A review of NeoBites, a line of sustainable dog food and treats made from cricket protein!

Now, you may be thinking: “why is this much needed?”. Well, because it’s time that we start thinking about the businesses we support and their carbon footprint, which inevitably turns into your carbon footprint. Or, pawprint, as NeoBites might say.

Sustainable Dog Food

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. NeoBites is an locally-owned company right here in Austin, serving fresh, human-grade dog food and treats made with all-natural ingredients.

The main source of protein is cricket, which, if you’re anything like me, might make you scream “NO” due to entomophobia (AKA the fear of bugs). But fear not, this food solves a lot of the issues that the pet food industry has while providing your pup with a delicious, nutritious and healthy meal. Sans cricket legs, which is most definitely not what I pictured when I first heard about this.

Hear me out: NeoBites uses a cricket protein powder, along with other ingredients such as oats, peas, pumpkin eggs and apples to create a well-balanced meal made for adult dogs. This makes the perfect sustainable dog food, both great for your dogs and for the environment. I love the picture above because it clearly lays out all of the ingredients used.

Not convinced yet? There are even more benefits to feeding human-grade food over kibble. Let me just tick them off: no meat (or other) by-products, no meat meal, no mystery meat, corn and soy free, no artificial coloring or flavors, and it’s gut + allergy friendly!

The Food

The food itself consists of fresh “patties” that must be kept refrigerated or frozen. They remind of fresh protein bars, but with the feel and consistency of meat patties. I absolutely love that I can see the halved peas and oats in the food, really hitting-home how fresh the food is.

We were sent a bag for the pups to try, which we mixed with their normal kibble. Trust me, one day I will make enough money to feed my entire 265lb (dog) household all-natural food. But until then, I will add in as much fresh food to their normal kibble as possible.

Want to see what other dog products we recommend? Lucky for you we have a list with 37 must-have products.

Feeding Time

When we were ready to feed, we moved the bag over to fridge and began mixing it with their daily kibble feeding. We cut their kibble by half, and added a little over half of the recommended amount on the NeoBites bag.

Final verdict? They loved it! Lucas and Cooper are both a little skeptical when it comes to new food, but they both dove in and licked their plates clean. Brooklyn, well, she would eat just about anything. But I will say she did try to sneak over to Cooper’s bowl to steal a little bite of his NeoBites.

Treat Your Self

Aside from their sustainable dog food, NeoBites also produces cricket-based dog treats with similar ingredients to their food. They come in 6oz bags and look like little chex-mix squares. We love using them as training treats because they are soft without being brittle, meaning we can break them into small bites without them completely falling apart.

If you’re not quite sure yet, they do allow you to “buy” a 1oz bag of the treats for free, just pay $5 for shipping!

Final Thoughts

Overall, I was beyond impressed with this food and will continue adding it to our daily routine. There are various human-grade, fresh foods in the market. But we love that NeoBites uses sustainable ingredients, which in turn reduces their carbon footprint and makes a difference in the environment.

Aside from that, they also vowed to donate 1% of their proceeds to 1% For The Planet, a local organization that donates proceeds to local environmental organizations. While it may not seem like a big deal, it’s important to remember that NeoBites is a brand-new company. Oftentimes, even the most well-established companies turn a blind eye when it comes to donating.

Even if you’re not ready to commit to switching your dog’s diet, I highly recommend routinely adding in fresh and healthy foods, or supplementing with a human-grade pet food like NeoBites like we do.

As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Cheers,
Mel
